There are a lot of reason why one would like to participate in PRIC (Pacific Rim International Student Camp). But for me, joining PRIC is my answer to my calling. Since two years ago, I made a personal goal that someday, I will try to follow my elders footsteps toward eliminating world hunger and to cherish the whole world. It may sound unrealistic, but it is something that could be done. When I heard about PRIC and what it has been doing toward this goal, I became very exited. Before I heard about PRIC, I was working on a couple different project, one of them is a project initiated by Ritsumeikan on making a community of students around the world. There, we discuss human rights, peace, development, and environmental problem. If I am selected, it would be an opportunity to expand the community and thus building an even stronger international community where we all understood each-other in crucial issues
But building international understanding could not be done alone. We need support from friends around the world. So my answer to the question on promoting international understanding is “yes”. I believe as an individual, I could make a contribution. As an Individual, I could promote it by reaching out to a bigger audience. How can I do it, you may ask. As a junior broadcaster at dRadio 103.4fm, I can try to add some information and other stuff that promote international and national understanding. Developing International understanding to be effective, if there is no national understanding, we need to work hard. As member of various clubs and organization, I could promote International issues. We have to expand to other venues, such as various debate and speech contest. If we succeed, it could be a perfect place to inform and promote these values.
The reason for these activities are, among others I like to talk in front of audience, to make speeches, and entertain others. These I can consider as one of my strong point. I am one of the debater in my school club, Al-Izhar Debating Society. I was also one of the school delegate from Al-Izhar High-School on some Speech and Debate competition. On various occasion, I was appointed to make speeches by my classmate. In most of the occasion, it was done in-front-of the whole faculty staff. There is one speech that i remember fluidly. It was a speech on a conference hold by Ritsumeikan High-School. From the look of the audience, it effected them, it was a great success and when I got back to my seat, I heard the audience applauding. That moment was very memorable to me.
As I stated earlier in this essay, I consider talking in front of audience as one of my strong point. There are other things that consider my strong point such as that I consider myself a very cheerful and a punctual person, and I have what I consider a good range of skills, from photography, carpentry, electronics, hearing, scouting, water rescue, first aid, and other various scouting skills. Scouting offer me a view of cultural diversity. Even though I studied in an islamic school, with scouting and other organization that I joined, I made friends from other religion and race. As I experienced in 2001 World Jamboree in Thailand, where I share camp with scouts from around the world and join the celebration as a scout and experience cultures from around the world. Before that, I actively chatting in Scoutlink, an international chat server dedicated for scouts, where I met my first international contacts and friends. All of them made me understand that we are not alone in this world. With JOTI (Jamboree On The Internet) and JOTA (Jamboree On The Air) I met more people than I could even imagine . Even with all those qualities, as a person, I have a shortcoming when it comes to memorizing things, it is my Achilles-heel. It seems that some things could be implanted to my memory, or they just don’t stick. But I have find some way dealing with this weakness. I always have pen-and-paper or mobile-phone around me so I can jot down things that I should memorize. My other weakness is that sometimes when I got exited on something, until a friend call me, I tend to forget the time.I have dreams, big dreams. I often like to imagine myself becoming an entrepreneur. While some other time, I dream to change the world. As Steve Jobs said, “Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”. How could I change the world? First, I have to have a degree on something. So I have decided my choices of degree and where I want to go. Upon finishing high-school, I would like to go to USC (University of Southern California) mainly because they have IBEAR MBA (International Business Education and Research) program that emphasize on Pacific rim business and their push for further globalization. Before getting into the IBEAR program, I will most likely to chose Business Management for my bachelor degree. To get accepted into USC, I maintain a B+ grade on all subjects and A+ on economics, accounting, and sociology. Last year I finish the IELTS prep course with exceptional marks. But due to my grandmother health condition, I might have to resort going to USC and go to SMU (Singapore Management University) to study Business Management. The reason I chose Business Management is because in the future, companies in Indonesia need to be better managed so they could compete in the global market. From there I could start making approaches to change the world. Nothing big at the start, but I want to make it memorable and worthwhile. For the funding, I could open up a computer store that do business with the education mass, since it is largely not developed in Indonesia. While on the subjects of my future and plans, whether I’m selected or not, I will continue working for my goals. I will continue promoting international understanding. But it sure will be more fun if I get selected.
